Dependence, Correlation and Gaussianity in Independent Component Analysis

چکیده

Independent component analysis (ICA) is the decomposition of a random vector in linear components which are “as independent as possible.” Here, “independence” should be understood in its strong statistical sense: it goes beyond (second-order) decorrelation and thus involves the nonGaussianity of the data. The ideal measure of independence is the “mutual information” and is known to be related to the entropy of the components when the search for components is restricted to uncorrelated components. This paper explores the connections between mutual information, entropy and non-Gaussianity in a larger framework, without resorting to a somewhat arbitrary decorrelation constraint. A key result is that the mutual information can be decomposed, under linear transforms, as the sum of two terms: one term expressing the decorrelation of the components and one expressing their non-Gaussianity. Our results extend the previous understanding of these connections and explain them in the light of information geometry. We also describe the “local geometry” of ICA by re-expressing all our results via a Gram-Charlier expansion by which all quantities of interest are obtained in terms of cumulants.

Background and Objectives: Evaluating the performance of clinical units is critical for effective management of health settings. Certain assessment of clinical variables for performance analysis is not always possible, calling for use of uncertainty theory. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an integrated independent component analysis-fuzzy-data envelopment analysis approach to accurate ...

The Three Easy Routes to Independent Component Analysis; Contrasts and Geometry

Blind separation of independent sources can be achieved by exploiting non Gaussianity, non stationarity or time correlation. This paper examines in a unified framework the objective functions associated to these three routes to source separation. They are the ‘easy routes’ in the sense that the underlying models are the simplest models able to capture the statistical structures which make sourc...

Functional connectivity in resting-state fMRI: Is linear correlation sufficient?

Functional connectivity (FC) analysis is a prominent approach to analyzing fMRI data, especially acquired under the resting state condition. The commonly used linear correlation FC measure bears an implicit assumption of Gaussianity of the dependence structure. If only the marginals, but not all the bivariate distributions are Gaussian, linear correlation consistently underestimates the strengt...

Information theoretic measures of dependence, compactness, and non-gaussianity for multivariate probability distributions

A basic task of exploratory data analysis is the characterisation of “structure” in multivariate datasets. For bivariate Gaussian distributions, natural measures of dependence (the predictive relationship between individual variables) and compactness (the degree of concentration of the probability density function (pdf) around a low-dimensional axis) are respectively provided by ordinary least-...
